Protect Your Hair: The Art of Proper Detangling

As a hair care company, we consider it our responsibility to share knowledge with our clients and virtual friends. Our last big post, titled “That’s Enough,” emphasized the importance of regular cleansing for those who are head over heels in love with dry shampoo.

In this post, we’re shifting focus to something equally critical: proper detangling habits. Over time, improper detangling can wear down the tensile strength of your strands, leading to stress, splitting, and breakage. While chemicals and heat styling are common culprits, poor detangling habits can be just as damaging.

Why Detangling the Right Way Matters

Your hair’s health isn’t just about the products you use; it’s also about how you handle it daily. Improper detangling can weaken the hair shaft, making it more susceptible to breakage and thinning. Here are our expert tips for minimizing damage and maintaining strong, healthy strands.

Our Harm Reduction Recommendations

  1. Detangle When Hair is Dry
Wet hair is at its weakest because the outer cuticle swells, exposing the keratin filaments of the cortex. This makes the disulfide and hydrogen bonds easier to pull apart and break. Whenever possible, do most of your detangling when your hair is dry.
  2. Detangle from the Bottoms Up
Always start detangling from the bottom of your hair and work your way up. If your hair is extremely tangled, apply a serum like our AXIS mōr Oil to smooth the cuticle. Here’s how:
    • Step 1: Separate your hair into four quadrants.
    • Step 2: Hold the first section about 2-3 inches from the bottom to support the strand.
    • Step 3: Use a detangling brush to gently work through the ends first, then move upward in 2-3 inch sections until you reach the roots.
    • Step 4: Repeat for each quadrant.
  3. Shampoo from Scalp to Ends
Use an SLS-free shampoo to cleanse gently. Get your fingertips under and inside your hair, massaging the scalp to create a rich lather. Apply a dime-to-loonie-sized amount of shampoo and work it down the hair shaft, agitating gently between your hands. Rinse thoroughly.
    Follow with a detangling conditioner:
    • Massage it into your scalp and down the hair shaft.
    • Let it sit for 2-5 minutes to balance pH and allow the cuticle to relax.
    • Rinse with warm water, guiding out any remaining tangles with your fingers.
  4. Towel Dry with Care
Instead of rubbing your hair, gently squeeze out excess moisture with a towel. Apply AXIS mōr Oil from midshaft to ends to lock in moisture. Use a wet detangling brush, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.
  5. Style and Enjoy
Style your hair as desired and revel in the difference. Healthier detangling habits lead to stronger, shinier, and more resilient hair day after day. ❤️
